“God is more than a trusty umbrella, we take out to shield ourselves from the rain, then fold it up again and pop it in our bags or the boot of our cars until another rainy day. He is more than a seasonal remedy for flu that we use,  and throw away when it is out of date; then when the symptoms return we look for another remedy we hope will work better than the last one.

God is so much more than someone to be used when we are in trouble and for our own agendas, then ignored until we are in trouble again. And if He doesn’t give us what we want, we denounce Him and try one of the other hundreds of religions out there hoping to find something or someone better; than God! The God of the universe who existed before our time began and who will exist for all eternity; is more than a trusty umbrella, or anything else we use only when we are in need. He is not a tool in our tool box.

Now, just to be clear, we definitely should call on God when we need Him and as often as we need Him, but not ONLY when we need Him. All too often, we come to God only when something is going wrong in our lives, with our personal agendas and speak to Him when we want Him to do something for us. Once we get what we want, we tend to forget all about Him until the next time. Our purpose in life is much more than demand and supply! Let’s remember that a relationship is a two-way connection and each party has their part to play.

God never fails us and does exactly what He says He will do, but the problem is us. When we first come to the Lord we are ‘babes in Christ,’ so we don’t fully understand what is required for a good, healthy spiritual relationship with our Father. However, some years in, we should be growing and become spiritually mature; and the ‘me,’ ‘me,’ ‘me,’ ‘gimme,’ ‘gimme,’ ‘gimme,’ should diminish over time. Whilst we have no material possessions that God is interested in, we have our love, our praise and our time. Precious commodities that costs nothing, yet we refuse to bless the Lord with them.

God does not need us, but we need Him. His life is amazing whether we are in it or not, but our lives are only amazing when He is in it. Before we start demanding things of God, let’s start with the basics and try doing what He has asked us to do first, then He will give us all the things we need, not necessarily the things we want!

Matthew 6:33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

We need to submit totally to God in all things and this begins with seeking Him, and praising Him. A beautiful scripture to read which will inspire you is the following Psalm. The Psalmist really ‘got it,’ and we too must ‘get it.’ When you follow hard after the Lord you will receive so much more than you could have imagined.

Psalm 63
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.
But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
