What is the Bible?

Keep it Simple Series

The Holy Bible is the book that Christians live by. It is a spiritual book in which the Holy Spirit reveals ‘the things’ of God to us. It was written by holy men of God under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, by revealing things to them. The Bible is the most beautifully written book you will ever read, hence why it outsells every other book ever written.

The Bible is unique and spiritually uplifting, because it is a spiritual gift to us from God. It feeds our spirit when we read it. To read and understand it is to love it, and it is not a once in a lifetime read. You will want and need to read it again and again. It is in-exhaustible if you allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the deeper revelations of Christ in its’ pages.

Many non-Christians believe the Bible was written by men and it is just a story book. They also believe the stories are fictional and reject them as truths. But every story in the Bible is a factual narrative, not just a ‘good story’.  It is our history book as well as our spiritual book.

The term Bible was first used in A.D. 400, and originates from the Greek word ‘biblia’ meaning ‘rolls’ or ‘scrolls’ which were the primary writing material used by the Greeks at that time – and was made from papyrus. The word ‘Bible’ means “book of books” or a “collection of books” and was written by many different scribes (writers of the time) under the inspiration and anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible consists of sixty-six books divided into two main sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the first section of the Bible and was originally written in Hebrew. However, some books of the Old Testament and some elements of the New Testament are recorded in Aramaic – the language that Jesus spoke. The vast majority of the New Testament was written in Greek, the common everyday language of that time.

The Old Testament or Old Covenant contains thirty-nine books (forty-six for the Catholics and other Orthodox denominations), starting with Genesis and ending with Malachi. Some books were written during the time between the Old and New Testaments when God was ‘silent’ in the earth. These books were not inspired by the Holy Spirit, so they have not been included in many versions of the Bible. They are known as the Apocrypha and are not part of the Hebrew Scriptures.

The Christian should aim to read the bible on a daily basis. It is not about how much you read, it’s about how much you understand. A verse or two a day will be invaluable to you. The Bible is available in many versions and on many mediums which makes it easy to read, study or listen to. You can read or listen to the Bible on your phone, tablet, laptop or buy hard copies.

The scriptures are power to the Christian when used in the right way. Jesus used the scriptures many times against Satan and we must use the scriptures when we are faced with challenges in our lives. And not just with challenges but when we are happy to praise God and bless others. The Christian should never be without their Bible also known as the sword of the spirit. Because we use it to fight many of our spiritual battles!

Scriptures:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. [2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV]

And when He [Jesus] had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He [Jesus] answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” [Matthew 4:2-4 NKJV]
